YOUNG TALENTS SEARCHED FOR “CINEMA COMPANY”    

Mamas, whose first film was Pappi Appacha, is searching for new faces for his latest project, “Cinema Company”. Mamas explained at the  press conference at Kochi that it is a golden chance for the youngsters who is aiming to be the future stars of the Malayalam Film Industry.

This film tells the story of the dreams and expectations of the new generation. The story, screenplay and direction of the film is done by Mamas himself. The film is expected to be a full time entertainer and 7 new faces are being searched for the film. The new stars will be elected from an audition that lasts for a month. After PappiAppacha, which told the story of a father and a son mixed with humour, Mamas is starting his new project with great expectation. Fareed Khan, a prominent business man of Lakshadweep is the producer of the film.

“It is the time of youngsters in Malayalam Film Industry. And Keralites always welcome new and different experiments in films. So Cinema Company will definitely be a great success”, said Mr. Fareed at the press conference. The film is produced under the banner of White Sands Media House and Mamasian Movies.

“The film has a strong story and it is presented in a totally different way. That was what attracted me to this project”, explained Mr. Fareed. Media Box Office of Kochi, an advertising company is the marketing and promotional partner of the Cinema Company. MBO director Sumitha said that very wide advertising programs are being planned for the auditions which are to be held at Kochi, Trivandrum and Kozhikode. The contestants who are selected will be given expert training before being casted in the film. The main sponsor of this one month long audition program is Dhatri Ayurveda Ltd.

The music direction of this film is done by Alphonse Joseph. And the section of cinematography is controlled by Jibu Jacob. Youngsters interested in audition are requested to visit the website, www.mamasianmovies.com. Entries received before the25th of August will be accepted for the audition. Applications are invited from youngsters between the age of 18 and 24. Both the male and female candidates can apply.

There are a number of new faces who are dreaming of entering the cinema field and marking their names there. K.V. Anand the director of Ayan and Ko is planning to do a movie with Mohanlal. The movie will start next year and it will release in both Tamil and Malayalam. Earlier K.V. Anand has worked with Mohanlal as a cinematographer in Priyadarshan’s Thenmavin Kombathu.

Renowned Malayalam composer Johnson (58)  passed away on Thursday, (August 18) evening at his Chennai home following a cardiac failure.
Johnson was known as the melody maker who made his debut with Bharathan’s Aaravam in early 70’s. His combination with Bharathan and later with Padmarajan produced many memorable hits like Namukku Parkan Munthiri Thopukkal, Njan Gandharavan and many others.
In the 90’s he struck a great tune with Sathyan Anthikad with whom he did a record 28 films like Varavelupu, Ponmuttaidinnu Tharavu,Thangathoni, and so many others.
Says Sathyan Anthikad: “ He was not only a great musician but also a good human being. Johnson was a former associate of Devarajan Master, so he knew that melodies are everlasting.  He was also a master at background score. Two films that come to my mind as having great background score are Bharathan’s Amaram and Fazil’s Manichitra Thazhu.”
Johnson won the National Film Award for Best Background Score for the films Ponthan Mada (1994) and Sukrutham (1995). He has received three Kerala State Film Award for Best Music Director, for  Ormakkayi (1982), Vadakkunokkiyantram and Mazhavil Kavadi (1989), and Angane Oru Avadhikkalathu (1999). 

The noted composer also got awards from the Kerala State Film Award for Best Background Music for the films Sadayam (1992) and Sallapam (1996). He has thus received five Kerala State Film Awards in music category, an achievement he shares with Devarajan.

Veettilekkulla Vazhi Review 

Veetilekkulla Vazhi (The Road Home) probes into the by now familiar and much discussed issue of terrorism, and in doing so doesn't really break any new ground.
As it stands however, it remains a commanding statement on the worthlessness of wars fought in the name of religion. 

I remember having read somewhere that there are just a handful of stories in this world. You tell them once, and then everything that is left is just retelling. And yet, a few manage to grab our attention by the way they express themselves, and you feel you have never heard this one before. Veetulekkula Vazhi is one such film that makes you want to believe in it, though in parts.

Here is a doctor without a name (Prithviraj), who takes upon himself a strange task - that of delivering a young boy to his father, who doesn't even know he has a son. The father happens to be a dreaded terrorist Tariq, and the doctor has his own reasons for embarking on this voyage.

The message that the film carries is loud and clear. There is no ambiguity about it at all, and in no time does it state that the hate in the world is without a reason. There is even an argument between the doctor and Razaq (Indrajith), a terrorist, on the futility of it all. Razaq cuts it short with a remark that this discussion is headed nowhere, and its better hence that they stopped bickering over it.

The film could very easily qualify for a road movie in that it starts off at Kerala, moves to Delhi, and then to Rajasthan - to Pushkar, Ajmer, Jaisalmer and finally Ladakh. The journey is a strenuous one, and at a point the heat gets the better of the doctor and he falls down exhausted. At the end of it all, he finds himself at another end of this remarkable country where the chilliness seeps into his bones as he sits in wait.

One cannot be beguiled however by the vast expanses of Ladakh though. The blemishes are there as well, and some very jarring ones at that. At the centre of them all, is the astonishment that everyone that the doctor runs into expresses, on his extraordinary act of kindness, that eventually sounds like an effort to dab a few subtle touches of heroism over the protagonist.

There are also attempts to deliberately explain the obvious like in the scene where a terrorist opens up a football to let us have a peek at the bomb inside it. Dragging in Orhan Pamuk into the picture, and telling the boy an uncharacteristically philosophical bedtime story that should have sapped him out further are other frail spots on this film.

Prithvi delivers a restrained performance in Veetulekkulla Vazhi, and adds up another film that's worth a mention in his repertoire. Indrajith in a few scenes proves yet again, what a charming actor he is, while Govardhan, the five year old actor matches up in talent with both of them. Uday Chandra who plays the Baba in the desert should not be missed as well.

M J Radhakrishnan's frames are undoubtedly the best thing about the film. The picturesque landscape of a spectacular land has been marvelously captured on film, thereby making Veetilekkulla Vazhi a visual delight. There is also the soulful background score by Pandit Ramesh Narayan that lends a further polish to the film.
