Ee Adutha Kaalathu Movie Review

Ee Adutha Kaalathu Movie Review
Arun Kumar Aravind's 'Ee Adutha Kaalathu' dabbles further with the multi-pronged approach in cinema, and armed with an undeniable power, courtesy Murali Gopy's forceful story telling, does the unthinkable - to keep you absorbed for a long, long running time of about three hours!

A marriage is on the rocks in one of the most flourishing suburbs in the city, and both Ajay Kurien (Murali Gopy) and his wife Madhuri (Tanushree Ghosh) have finally realized that there is nothing much that they can do about it. Far away, under a thatched rented house that threatens to topple down any moment, Vishnu (Indrajith), his wife Remani (Mythili) and their two kids make do with whatever little they have.

The Commissioner of Police, Tom Cherian (Anoop Menon) lives in constant dread of being made a laughing stock by the public, since a serial killer is on the loose, and the police department hasn't been able to do anything about it. His journalist girlfriend Rupa (Lena) has had it up to the hilt with the yellow press having a field time proclaiming the details of their clandestine romance, and keeps coercing Tommy to tie her the knot.

Multiple narratives have almost become overused in the world of cinema in general, and yet if it works extraordinarily well in 'Ee Adutha Kaalathu', it's because there are no deliberate efforts to link them together. Here, it's just that these characters hurriedly move about on the uneven landscape that carries them, and every now and then cross paths, sometimes to return and sometimes never to see each other again.

The subtlety with which the narrative dwells on some very significant issues that lie all around is highly appreciable. The waste dump where a human corpse gets dumped is more than a garbage ground; there are living, suffering human beings outside it, unaware of the rotting corpse that lies within, but fully conscious of an environmental hazard that had started to eat away their lives from outside and from deep inside. The almost uncontrollable influx of the immigrant workers from all over the North East has over the last few years emerged as a matter of grave concern, and the silhouettes of scores of those unknown faces walking towards you at a building site generates an uneasy reminder.

The Performances
Ee adutha is one rare movie in which every other actor has given their best.Indran as 'Vettu'Vishnu is terrific and you can hardly imagine any other actor in his place.Indran is one actor who inspite of his histrionic capabilities hasn’t really got his due in Malayalam Cinema.Hope this movie gets him the much deserved standing ovation that he has been vying for.The 'Trivandrum/Parassala slang' that has become a bit cliched, thanks to Suraj Venjaramoodu and his antics is also used intelligently by him in this movie. Anoop Menon as the IPS officer continues his good work here too and so does Lena(Traffic,Randam Bhavam) who plays the young journo.Thanusree Ghosh as the frustrated wife is apt though at places the lip sync  is not up to the mark. The usually wooden faced Nishan proves that he can emote too if  guided by a sensible director and is backed with an intelligently written role.Baiju who plays Watson,Jagathy Sreekumar as the magazine editor,Murali Gopi as Ajay are nothing but brilliant.Mythili who plays Indran’s wife too doesn’t disappoint though she has a brief role in the movie.

Technical department and Songs:
Arun Kumar Aravind who adapted ‘Butterfly on a wheel’  as ‘Cocktail’ last year is back with a genuine and original movie this time.Ee adutha is a movie which he can definitely be proud of and most importantly Malayalam Cinema has got a sensible and intelligent director after a really long time.

Spanish Masala Movie Review - A Good Entertainer

Spanish Masala Movie Review - A Must Watch Entertainer
Spanish Masala Movie Review

Spanish Masala the new Dileep movie which has been released on January 20 2012 is a must watch. The movie is entirely shot in the outskirts of Spain. The movie is a refreshing change from the same old locations we used to see in the films and is a treat for any avid movie goer.
The cast includes veteran Malayalam actors like Dileep, Kunchacko Boban,Biju Menon and also some European actors. The heroine of the movie is Daniela Zacherie who is an Austrian actress. She plays the role of Camilla who is the daughter of the former Spanish ambassador to India. Kunchacko Boban plays her love interest Rahul and dileep as charlie comes into the story line.
The film is narrated from the view point of charlie who visits Spain as a part of troupe. In search of better prospects in life he vanishes away from the troupe in Spain. Without any knowledge of the alien language spoken in the country, Dileep finds it hard to survive. It is then his skills as the cook comes to the fore and he excels in it. [ story line on this part reminded me of the film "Ramji Londonwale" played by Madhavan]. The sequences during this part of the film is entirely comical and a wonderful escape from the slap stick treatment of Suraj.

The story then turns into the life of Camilla and Rahul. Camilla was brought up in India right from her childhood and have a strong bond with the cultural aspects of India. It is in this scenario that Dileep enters into the main story line and the film in the second half turns sentimental.

Dileep as charlie is apt and no better actor can portray this character to perfection. Kunchacko Boban gets the full credit for the character he portrays. Biju Menon has been a revelation ever since seniors got released. He continues his good form in this movie too. The foreign actors seemed quite professional.
One thing that has to mentioned more is the willingness of Lal Jose to take the risk in shooting such a film in such different circumstances. Producer of the film does not disappoint us.

Noushad too deserves the credit for spending his money in shooting the film entirely outside India . Lal jose excels in his direction and displays the class inside him that makes everyone call him a director with a difference.

Music of the movie by Vidyasagar is moderately good. Though there was room for improvement in terms of music, Vidyasadgar

Script by Benny p Nayarambalam is typical of his style with intruding comedies in the first half and which turns quite serious in the second half. It is this typical skill of Benny that draws audiences to the films scripted by him. Well done Benny well done.

The film also showcases what has never been done in Malayalam cinema. The film shows the La Tomatina festival , Bullfighting and the Flamenco dance.I felt that Lal Jose had gotten that inspiration from the hit Hindi movie "Zindagi na milegi dobara". But the cinematography in those scenes rocked without losing the pace of the film at any instant.

Overall a movie that should not be missed at any cost. Highly recommended. Watch it for Dileep , Kunchacko Boban and Lal Jose.

Malayalam Movie PRANAYAM Review

Blessy's "Pranayam" starring Mohanlal, Anupam Kher and Jayaprada in key roles released On August 31st with a good opening. The movie produced by Mr Sajeev P.K under the banner of Fragrant Nature Films. Pranayam opens up with Achutha Menon (played by Anupam Kher) who happens to get a glance of his ex-wife Jayaprada in the hospital lift and faints. Achutha Menon stays with his only son Suresh played by Anoop Menon and has survived the heart attack. He is partly paralised after the stroke and is left in a wheel chair now. Achuta Menon has divorced his first wife Gracy played by Jayaprada, on some misunderstanding.
As you learn in the next few scenes, Grace was once married to Achutha Menon and they got divorced after some misunderstandings, when Suresh was still a kid. She had then married Mathews (Mohanlal), a retired philosophy professor who was by now in a wheel chair, after a stroke that left him partly paralyzed.
Mohanlal`s character selection to play the role of Mathew was wonderful.Mohanlal is there on screen for a limited period only but he unleashes sheer magic with a scintillating performance. His superb dialogue delivery and the subtle mannerisms that perfectly suit the ailing person that he has portrayed explain why he is regarded as one of the finest actors ever on Indian screen.

Casting the best available talent of Mohanlal and Anupam Kher for two pivotal parts and doing complete justice to their roles is tough. But the ease with which Blessy handles the tense moments, the considerate dialogues between the lead players  and also the emotional finale shows his expertise as a master narrator.
Blessy's choice of actors is perfect. And the characters they portray are real adorable, so close to life or so inspiring. Mohanlal and Anupam Kher comes up with scintillating performances, with loads of emotional  precision in each of the heavy sequences. But the star of the show is definitely Jayapradha, who had enlivened the central role to such perfection that to state that she is exceptional would be an understatement. She as a charming, mid aged lady is flawless and a treat to watch that it will definitely be her role of a lifetime. Anoop Menon also uses his limited space to craft an unforgettable character, while all others in the cast are appropriate in their roles.

The melodies written by ONV Kurup and the music done by M Jayachandran totally lifts you to the mood of the situations when sung by P Jayachandran, Shreya Goshal, Sharath and Vijay Yesudas.

Veettilekkulla Vazhi Malayalam Movie Review

Veettilekkulla Vazhi Review

Veetilekkulla Vazhi (The Road Home) probes into the by now familiar and much discussed issue of terrorism, and in doing so doesn't really break any new ground.
As it stands however, it remains a commanding statement on the worthlessness of wars fought in the name of religion.

I remember having read somewhere that there are just a handful of stories in this world. You tell them once, and then everything that is left is just retelling. And yet, a few manage to grab our attention by the way they express themselves, and you feel you have never heard this one before. Veetulekkula Vazhi is one such film that makes you want to believe in it, though in parts.

Here is a doctor without a name (Prithviraj), who takes upon himself a strange task - that of delivering a young boy to his father, who doesn't even know he has a son. The father happens to be a dreaded terrorist Tariq, and the doctor has his own reasons for embarking on this voyage.

The message that the film carries is loud and clear. There is no ambiguity about it at all, and in no time does it state that the hate in the world is without a reason. There is even an argument between the doctor and Razaq (Indrajith), a terrorist, on the futility of it all. Razaq cuts it short with a remark that this discussion is headed nowhere, and its better hence that they stopped bickering over it.

The film could very easily qualify for a road movie in that it starts off at Kerala, moves to Delhi, and then to Rajasthan - to Pushkar, Ajmer, Jaisalmer and finally Ladakh. The journey is a strenuous one, and at a point the heat gets the better of the doctor and he falls down exhausted. At the end of it all, he finds himself at another end of this remarkable country where the chilliness seeps into his bones as he sits in wait.

One cannot be beguiled however by the vast expanses of Ladakh though. The blemishes are there as well, and some very jarring ones at that. At the centre of them all, is the astonishment that everyone that the doctor runs into expresses, on his extraordinary act of kindness, that eventually sounds like an effort to dab a few subtle touches of heroism over the protagonist.

There are also attempts to deliberately explain the obvious like in the scene where a terrorist opens up a football to let us have a peek at the bomb inside it. Dragging in Orhan Pamuk into the picture, and telling the boy an uncharacteristically philosophical bedtime story that should have sapped him out further are other frail spots on this film.

Prithvi delivers a restrained performance in Veetulekkulla Vazhi, and adds up another film that's worth a mention in his repertoire. Indrajith in a few scenes proves yet again, what a charming actor he is, while Govardhan, the five year old actor matches up in talent with both of them. Uday Chandra who plays the Baba in the desert should not be missed as well.

M J Radhakrishnan's frames are undoubtedly the best thing about the film. The picturesque landscape of a spectacular land has been marvelously captured on film, thereby making Veetilekkulla Vazhi a visual delight. There is also the soulful background score by Pandit Ramesh Narayan that lends a further polish to the film.

Veetilekkulla Vazhi (The Road Home) probes into the by now familiar and much discussed issue of terrorism, and in doing so doesn't really break any new ground.
As it stands however, it remains a commanding statement on the worthlessness of wars fought in the name of religion.
